Wisdom Teeth Removal

What are wisdom teeth? They are the third and final set of molars to enter your mouth – two on the upper jaw and two on the lower jaw. For most people, they will start appearing around the teenage years and fully emerge in your early to mid-20’s.

Because the human mouth is not designed to hold these extra set of molars, wisdom teeth removal is a very common and very popular procedure, done by an oral surgeon or by a dentist that is experienced and knowledgeable. The problem that they cause is they often start affecting other teeth because they end up becoming “impacted,” or growing sideways. When that happens, it’s time for extraction and a visit to the dentist or oral surgeon’s office.

At Premier Hollywood Dental Clinic, we have a great deal of experience with this procedure and will walk our patients through the entire process – from initial consultation to the actual day of the procedure to a follow-up visit. We highly recommend that extraction occur as early as possible, ideally in the early 20’s so as to prevent any complications from possibly arising.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction – The Procedure

The procedure is fairly simple: for most, you will have either 2 removed at once or all 4 removed at once, depending on your specific situation. A anesthetic will be used so that no pain is felt and the patient can sleep through the entire procedure and not be aware of what is going on.

As for the actual extraction itself, our Hollywood dental team will open up the gum tissue first and remove any bone that is covering the tooth. Next, we will separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth in question. Depending on severity of the specific tooth or how close it is to the nerve endings, we may cut the tooth into smaller, more manageable pieces so that extraction is easier to handle.

Why Should I Get My Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Almost everyone will have wisdom teeth removal, either because they are currently experiencing complications or pain or to prevent future problems and complications. Often what happens is the teeth will not be able to erupt through the gums because the human mouth is not physically big enough to be able to fit an extra set of molars.

When that happens, or if they end up breaking halfway through the gums, a small flap of gum tissue will grow over the tooth. This then makes it very easy for food and germs to become trapped under the gums and thus the pain and swelling starts to occur. For those who have experienced this kind of pain, it is quite often quite severe and not a pleasurable experience by any means.

Additionally, if they do become impacted, they can often cause infection, damage to other teeth as well as causing a cyst.

What Happens After Extraction?

Once the wisdom teeth removal procedure is done and completed, we recommend that you rest for a full 24-hours and stay away from any strenuous physical activities. There may be soreness in the jaw but you will be able to eat the same day.

In a week or so, you will come back in to our Hollywood clinic and we will see if any complications has arisen and check up on your status.
