Dental Bridges

For people who have a tooth that has fallen out or has been removed, a bridge is used to fill the empty space that now exists. Typical bridges involve a filler tooth, called a pontic, that is attached to two surrounding crowns, called abutments. This bridge structure is then bonded into your mouth once complete.
Many people believe that dental bridges only offer an aesthetic benefit when that is hardly the case – bridges help safeguard the integrity of existing teeth and prevent your teeth from shifting, leading to biting and/or jaw problems and even potentially periodontal disease due to the space in your mouth.

Types of Dental Bridges

The first kind of bridge is called a fixed bridge – a filler tooth that is attached to two crowns with the crowns fit over the existing teeth to hold the bridge in place. The most popular kind of bridges, and a procedure that our Hollywood dental team performs almost daily, is the fixed bridge.

A second kind of bridge is called a cantilever bridge – this is when there are only teeth on one side of the span. The typical cantilever bridge is 3-units with 2 abutment crowns positioned right next to each other on the same side of the missing tooth space. The pontic is then connected to the two crowns extending into the missing space.

A third kind of bridge is called a composite bond or a “Maryland” bridge. For Hollywood bridges, especially “Maryland” dental bridges, our clinic performs a very thorough operation from beginning to end. Maryland bridges are made of plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal framework with metal wings on each side bonded to your existing teet. The Maryland bridge is often used to replace front teeth.

What kind of bridge should you get for your teeth? This depends on your budget/how much you are willing to spend and also on whether you care about how realistic/authentic your dental bridges look.

What Are The Benefits of Bridges?

As alluded to above, bridges bring several benefits: a big one is the help in distributing the forces in your bite properly by replacing the missing teeth in your mouth. Second, when you have missing teeth, there is a strong possibility that your existing will end up drifting out of position, leaving you with complications and a possible surgery down the road. With dental bridges, you prevent your remaining teeth from drifting out of position. Third, with gaps in your mouth, it is much easier for food to be “packed” or left in the gaps, which cause decay and gum disease among other things.
